Law Management Section

The Law Management Section

The Law Management Section was launched in 1998 to support those involved in the management of law firms and to act as a centre of excellence in law firm management.

I have worked with the section from the outset and in 2000 helped set up its first annual financial benchmarking surveys.  Since 2008 I have been a member of its Executive committee and I am currently vice chair.

Our goal is “to provide our members with the best available advice information and support on the leadership and management issues of the day, enabling their businesses to perform better and more profitably.”

Key benefits

The Law Management Section has approximately 1,000 members and provides a wide range of support:

  • The annual Financial Benchmarking Survey is the leading annual survey in England & Wales for small and medium sized firms.  Free to firms that participate, it is produced by Hazlewoods and is sponsored by Lloyds Bank.  It has long been regarded as the pre-eminent financial benchmarking survey.  Click here for more details;
  • An annual conference in London in May each year – previous speakers have included Richard, Susskind, Stephen Mayson, Alan Hodgart, leading economist Justin Urquhart Stewart, Independent and Evening Standard journalist Anthony Hilton and Nick Jarrett-Kerr;
  • An annual Finance and Business Conference in the autumn in London.  Each year we have a range of excellent speakers comprising leading law firm managing or finance partners and leading advisors to the profession.  The former have included Joy Kingsley (JMW, Manchester), Simon McCrum (Darbys, Oxford) and Colin Flanagan (Freeths, Nottingham).  The latter, Andrew Allen of Francis Clarke, Steve Arundale of Nat West and Trish Kinahan of Hazlewoods;
  • An annual HR Forum each Spring in London, chaired by former LMS chair and partner at Goodman Derrick, Alison Downie;
  • Regional managing partner networking events, held typically held in Manchester, Leeds, Cambridge and in the south west;
  • An excellent quarterly magazine – Managing for Success.
